3PL Fulfillment Prep: What Actually Happens Before Your Product Reaches Amazon or Your Customer

Most sellers hear "3PL fulfillment prep" and picture some faceless warehouse where boxes disappear and reappear labeled. That's not wrong, exactly, but it skips the part that actually matters — what happens to your inventory between the truck dock and the shelf, and who's making decisions about it while you're not there.

We run a 1,200 sq ft climate-controlled facility in Lebanon, Ohio, and we do this work every day for FBA, FBM, Shopify, Walmart, and TikTok Shop sellers. So this isn't a definitions post. It's what the process looks like from our side of the dock, including the parts sellers usually don't ask about until something goes sideways.

Prep Is Not One Service, It's Three or Four Stacked Together

When people say "prep" they usually mean FNSKU labeling — and yes, that's a big part of it. Ours runs $1.00/unit for orders under 50 units, dropping to $0.75/unit at 50-299, $0.50/unit at 300-999, and $0.35/unit once you're over 1,000 units. Turnaround is 24-48 hours from the moment inventory clears receiving, not from when the truck shows up.

But prep also covers poly-bagging, bundling, and — this is the one that trips people up — inspection. Inspection isn't a glance and a checkbox. We open the polybag or outer case, count against the manifest or packing slip you sent ahead of time, check for damage or wrong-item shipments, and photograph anything that doesn't match before it goes further. If a case has 48 units and the manifest says 50, that gets flagged and photographed before we touch a label gun. Sellers who skip sending an accurate manifest ahead of time are the ones who get surprise emails from us mid-week.

If you want the full breakdown of what counts as "prep" versus what's actually a separate fulfillment step, our prep center overview walks through it in more detail than makes sense to repeat here.

Receiving Is Where Most Delays Actually Start

Nobody thinks about receiving until their inventory is sitting on our warehouse floor a day longer than expected. Boxes come in at $1.50/box, pallets at $40/pallet — but the rate isn't the part that matters. What matters is that pallets are received on our warehouse, checked against the ASN or your inbound notice, and logged before anything gets touched for prep or storage. If your pallet count doesn't match what you told us, we hold it and reach out rather than guessing.

This is also where FBA removals come back into the picture. If Amazon sends your inventory back to us instead of to you directly, that's a separate receiving and processing flow — pricing depends on unit count per SKU, and it's worth checking our pricing page rather than assuming a flat rate applies across the board.

Storage Isn't Just a Holding Pattern

Storage runs $1/cubic foot per month, or $40/pallet if that's a cleaner fit for your setup. First 30 days are free, one time, per client — not renewable per SKU, so don't stack new products through it hoping for a loophole. We've had sellers try.

The real value of storage with a prep center isn't the rate. It's that your inventory isn't sitting blind in a warehouse you can't see into. We run our floor on Ysell, a WMS platform (Ysell.pro, built by Fulfillmentbox) that gives you your own login and personal ID at signup. Once you're in, you can check unit counts, cubic footage, and running costs in real time, 24/7 — not "email us and wait for a spreadsheet." If you've never used a prep center's inventory system before, our Ysell walkthrough guide covers the login flow step by step.

Kitting, Bundling, and Fulfillment Are Where Volume Actually Matters

Kitting and bundling pricing scales with set complexity, not just unit count: $1.00/set for 2-3 units, up to $1.75/set for 6-12 units. MOQ is 500 sets, though we've made exceptions for test runs when a seller's validating a new bundle before committing volume — worth asking rather than assuming it's a hard wall.

FBM order fulfillment is priced differently depending on your daily volume — 10+ orders/day runs $2.00/order, under that it's $2.50/order, plus $0.30 per additional unit in a multi-item order. Cutoff is 11:59am Monday through Friday for same-day shipping. Miss the cutoff and it ships next business day — we don't do weekend fulfillment runs, so plan Thursday/Friday order timing accordingly if you're running promotions.

Customer returns for FBM orders run $1.50/unit standard, $3.00/unit for oversized items — inspected the same way inbound inventory is, against whatever return reason the customer gave.

What We Don't Handle

Worth saying plainly: we don't take large furniture, anything frozen or requiring refrigeration, or lithium batteries. If your catalog includes any of that, we're not the right fit for that SKU, even if the rest of your inventory works fine here.

Getting Started Without Committing to Anything

There's no setup fee and no long-term contract — you can leave whenever the arrangement stops working for you. New clients pick one welcome offer: 10 FBM orders free, or 50 units of FBA prep free. It's meant to let you see the actual turnaround and communication before you commit real volume, not just take our word for it.

FAQ

How fast do I get my Ysell login after signing up? Typically within 24 hours of completing intake. If it's been longer than that, check your spam folder first — after 24-48 hours with nothing, email us directly and we'll re-send the credentials.

Do I need to set you up as the return address before requesting an FBA removal? Yes, and this is the single most common mistake we see. Amazon needs your prep center listed as the return address in your removal order settings before the shipment leaves their warehouse — if it's not set up first, the removal ships to your home or default address instead, and rerouting it costs more than doing it right the first time.

How much does FBA removal processing actually cost? It depends on unit count per SKU and whether repackaging is involved. Rather than quote a number that might not match your situation, send us your manifest and we'll give you an exact quote before anything ships.

Can I ship a mixed pallet with FBA, FBM, and Shopify inventory together? Yes — we sort by destination and channel on receiving, logged separately in Ysell so your cost and inventory tracking stay accurate per channel, even if it all arrived on one pallet.

Questions first? The FAQ above covers most of what new clients ask, but if yours isn't here, just reach out directly and we'll answer it before you commit to anything.
